Sitewide Content Refresh
You don't always have to start from scratch. We help you recover rankings and clicks from existing content, and reposition your old content for AI answers.
What it is
A lot of REI firms publish new content while their best articles quietly lose momentum — pages that ranked on page one, drove consistent traffic, and generated leads. Over time, those pages slip. Facts go stale. Competitors publish fresher versions. Search intent shifts. AI answer engines start pulling from newer, better-structured content instead.
This service identifies your decaying or underperforming content and brings it back to competitive condition: updated facts, expanded sections, improved structure, tighter SEO, and AEO formatting so it surfaces in AI answers — not just traditional search results.
Why it works
Search behavior keeps changing. And rankings decline when freshness, depth, and click-through rates decay over time. This is why your 3-year old content that used to rank in page one is now probably resting on page 3 where no one sees it. It's not that it's quality is bad. It's just been outranked by fresher and more comprehensive content.
Plus, these older pieces are invisible to AI answer engines like ChatGPT. AI tools like ChatGPT look for content that is structured, clear, and directly answers questions. These old pieces weren't formatted for AI citations.
We help you update these proven old content pieces for modern SEO and AI answer engines by improving structure, clarity, formatting, and question-based relevance. In a niche as competitive as REI and private lending, the barrier to ranking isn't always creating more content. Often it's making what you already have the best version of itself.

ABOUT THE PROCESS
RESULTS AND EXPECTATIONS
How do you determine which pieces need a refresh vs. which ones are beyond saving?
The best candidates are pieces that ranked and drove traffic before but have since declined — they have domain authority and indexing history already working in their favor. Pieces that never ranked are a different problem and may need a different approach. If you're unsure which pieces qualify, the SEO strategy offer might be something to start with.
How long before I see ranking improvements after a refresh?
CTR improvements from tightened titles and meta descriptions can appear within 2–4 weeks of republishing, once Google recrawls the page. Ranking position recovery typically follows over 4–12 weeks depending on how competitive the keyword is and how significant the content improvements are. AI citation appearances can show up faster — sometimes within days of a page being optimized for AI crawlers.
How much do you change? Is it light editing or a significant rewrite?
It varies by piece. Some content needs new sections and updated facts with the existing structure largely intact. Others need more significant restructuring to meet current search intent and AEO requirements. The scope is assessed per piece — you'll know what's planned before work begins. However, it typically goes beyond light editing.
Will a refresh help my content show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews?
AEO formatting significantly improves the likelihood of AI citation — but no one can guarantee placement in any specific AI system. What the formatting does is make your content structurally eligible: clear answers, direct language, FAQ structure, and TLDR summaries that AI tools can extract and attribute.
What does "AEO formatting" mean in practice — what exactly gets added?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) means structuring content so AI tools can extract and cite it directly. In practice: adding a TLDR summary near the top, adding a FAQ section with direct question-and-answer formatting, using clear subheadings that mirror how people phrase queries, and ensuring the most citable facts are stated clearly and early in each section.
What if my traffic loss is from a manual Google penalty?
A content refresh addresses quality and relevance — it won't resolve a manual penalty from mass-produced AI content or a technical issue like duplicate content or unnatural links. If your traffic dropped sharply after a specific Google update, it's worth diagnosing the cause before investing in a refresh. To discuss further, book a free consultation call below.
What's the difference between what you do and just updating a publish date?
Google's algorithm now heavily uses AI. They know when the content of a page has actually been updated vs when an SEO is just trying to game the system. You may not see any ranking changes from just updating the publish date. Plus, you need content that's actually updated for AEO if you'd like to be cited in AI answers and Google's AI Overviews.
Do you update the title tag and meta description, or just the body content?
Yes. While we do update meta descriptions for each refreshed piece, we only update your titles if we get the go-ahead. But title tags and meta descriptions are often where the quickest CTR gains come from. A tighter, more relevant title alone can boost your click-through rate without you having to wait for a full ranking recovery.
FIT AND COMMITMENT
SCOPE AND PRICING
My content never ranked to begin with — would a refresh help, or do I need something else?
Probably not in isolation. A refresh is designed to recover what was already built.
If the piece never ranked, there's likely a more fundamental issue with the original keyword strategy, content depth, or domain authority. That's a different conversation, and it may be worth starting with the content strategy offer, where we hop on a call, map out your content direction, and audit your current content and your competitors' to find gaps worth covering.
Some of my pieces are 3–4 years old. Is that too old to be worth refreshing?
You can cancel at anytime. Just give a 30-days' notice before cancellation.
Does $150 cover pieces of any length, or is there a word count limit?
Mostly, yes. $150 covers everything — new sections, FAQs, TLDR summaries, meta descriptions, SEO and AEO optimization. For longer pillar pages or cornerstone content that may need more than two additional sections and 10+ frequently asked questions, we may quote you separately based on the extra word count.
I have 50+ pieces that need attention. Where do we even start?
Start with pieces that have the most traffic and clicks to recover — URLs that ranked well and have declined most sharply tend to respond best to a refresh. A content audit can suss out these URLs and rank them by priority: highest recovery potential, highest business impact, and lowest competitive difficulty.
Do you update images, alt text, or internal links — or just the written content?
Internal linking recommendations are included — identifying which new or existing pages should be linked from the refreshed piece. Image replacement and alt texts are not.
Is there bundle pricing for refreshing multiple pieces?
For a full content audit and strategic content direction, you may want to start with the content strategy offer. We'll identify which pieces across your site are worth refreshing and in what priority order. The bundled offer (4+ pieces) includes a FREE sitewide audit.
Can I send pieces inconsistently — a few this month, none next month?
The pay-as-you-go structure is designed for flexibility — send pieces when you have them, pause when you don't. There's no minimum monthly commitment. That said, clients who send pieces in batches (e.g. 3–5 at a time) tend to get the most out of the process since results tend to be cumulative.
One-at-a-time refreshes may offer lesser context on what's working and what's not.
How do I submit a piece, and what do you need from me?
The URL is the starting point. Along with it, share the target keyword, and optionally, any ranking or traffic data you have access to (Google Search Console screenshots are helpful).
How do I measure success after the refresh is done?
The clearest signals to watch in Google Search Console: CTR improvement on the refreshed URL, impression recovery for target keywords, and average position movement. Secondary signals: organic traffic in Google Analytics, and manual checks for AI answer citations. A baseline screenshot of your current metrics before republishing makes the comparison much cleaner.
How long does each refresh take to turn around?
2-3 days per refresh. 1-2 weeks for four or five articles.
Is a content audit included, or is that a separate service?
Yes. We can refresh four of your pieces for a flat $500, and five at $600. Note that this bundle requires pieces to be submitted in a single batch or within days of each other.
